Fastpitch Softball Equipment
Fastpitch Softball Equipment - Is There A Real Difference?
In a word - OF COURSE! As the name suggests, fastpitch softball means that the ball is coming at the batter a lot quicker than in slowpitch. This has serious consequences for the batter, pitcher, and catcher. But as far as equipment is concerned, the major differences between fastpitch softball equipment and slowpitch are seen in the bats and the catcher’s mitt.
The differences between fastpitch softball gear and slowpitch equipment do not vary all that much in the other positions, however. The catcher’s mitt for the fastpitch softball player will understandably have greater padding to help absorb the sting from the quicker pace of the balls. As far as the other positions are concerned, however, the size of the
softball glove in slowpitch or fastpitch is really centered around the position played and the diameter of the ball. The size of the
softball used depends upon the rules of the league or organization being played for.
The Fastpitch Bat - Smaller, Lighter
Because the softball is coming at the batter so much quicker than in slowpitch, there will be less time to decide whether or not to swing. For this reason,
fastpitch bats are lighter than their slowpitch counterparts (by as much as 7-8 ounces!) and they have smaller barrels. No softball player will want to use a slowpitch bat in a fastpitch game so make sure to buy the right bat for the right game because there are definite and important differences in equipment between the two games. Online retailers can help you find the right
equipment for the game you are playing and have a better selection and prices than most traditional softball equipment retailers.
