Softball Gloves & Mitts

Softball Gloves - Get It Right

Softball gloves come in many different styles and sizes and are designed with deeper pockets to accept the bigger ball. When buying a softball glove for a youth or adult player, be sure to fit the glove or mitt to the position the athlete will play.

The proper fitted glove should have a snug comfortable fit and should not be too big for the player’s hand. If the glove is too big, the player can lose glove control making it difficult to finish the big plays.

Fielding Gloves

Softball fielding gloves range in sizes from 11” to13” inches long and are made to suit specific positions.

Middle infielders like shortstop and second base tend to use shorter gloves for quick turns and throws to first base while third base uses a little larger glove to help give them more range on sharply hit balls.

Outfielders gloves are usually larger like 12” – 13” inches and increase the fielders over all reach and field coverage on tough pop fly’s.

Catcher and First Base Mitts

Catchers and first base mitts are designed differently than the average infield/outfield gloves.

Catcher's mitts are designed with heavier padding to protect the hand from high-speed pitches and are reinforced to withstand the heavy use.

When buying a softball catcher’s mitt look for designs with an increased pocket size and palm padding to protect and reduce the sting of the ball.

First base mitts are longer and have large pockets to help field throws from infielders. The pocket is shallower than an outfielders glove to help allow quick ball retrieval.

Glove Materials

Gloves can be made from either leather or synthetic materials.

Leather offers the best comfort, feel, and control making it the best choice for a glove. Leather gloves are often chemically treated for a quicker break in period and are more durable then synthetic materials.

Synthetic gloves have advantages as well especially for youth players and parents. These gloves are often lighter and less expensive then leather gloves and work well for the casual youth player or kids just learning to play softball.
