Softballs - Pick The Right Ball For Practice Or Games

Today’s big named manufactures like Dudley, Rawlings, Worth, and DeMarini all make great softballs. Understanding how a softball is made and how it will effect everyday play is essential to picking the right ball for your team.

Softballs are constructed with polyurethane cores and are wrapped with either synthetic or leather covers. Synthetic covered balls work best for practices and wet conditions where leather covered balls work well for games and dry conditions.

The balls cores are compression controlled and rated for performance to protect the players on the field. A higher core rating such as a .47 core ball produces more spring then a .40 core rating. Some balls are designed with a Reduced Injury Factor (RIF). These balls are ideal for youth practices and league play.

Sizes of balls can very from league to league. As a general rule of thumb, adult leagues typically use a 12” ball as youth and women leagues use an 11” ball.

League Certified

All softball leagues have there own governing standards and therefore have ball performance requirements. When purchasing game or tournament balls, be sure to verify they’re approved in your league of play.

With the rapidly increasing bat technologies, the balls are now matched with approved league bats to help control and protect players from injuries.

Practice Softballs

Practice balls can be purchased in either dozen, bucket or bulk orders. For indoor or outdoor practices, Atec makes a specific ball for their pitching machines.

Other manufactures like Diamond Sports make a yellow dimpled practice ball for increased visibility and easy eye tracking.
